Luce Meunier (b.1973, Montreal) concerns her artistic practice with finding new and original methods and processes of creating geometric abstraction. Avoiding classical methods of production, Meunier explores the applications and limits of various materials, often finding alternative and intersecting usage to create works where the geometry and structure are visible.
Par dessus/ dessous (2014) combines painting with sculpture by folding, warping, and molding the flatness of the canvas. Like pleats in clothing, the artist’s manipulation of the medium adds physical depth to the rigid two-dimensional composition. The hazy bands of colour across the canvas add to the sculptural effect as they conform to the surface and reveal the structure of the painting.
Meunier lives and works in Montreal. Her works were exhibited in numerous venues such as the Maison de la culture Claude-Léveillée (Montreal), where they presented a retrospective exhibition of her works, Galerie Karsh-Masson (Ottawa), Plein sud – centre d’exposition en art actuel (Longueuil), Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark (Montreal) and Parisian Laundry (Montreal). Luce Meunier has done many residencies, namely at the CAMAC (France), the Banff Center (Banff) and the Lobe (Chicoutimi). Her works were acquired by many private, corporate and institutional collections such as the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, TD Bank, National Bank of Canada, Hydro-Québec, Bank of Montreal and the Tedeschi collection. She was a finalist in the RBC Canadian painting competition in 2006.
