Eli Langer (b. 1967, Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian visual artist who works primarily in painting. His works are known for their stillness and calmness, painting intimate moments without complexity in the composition or concept. Although the subjects vary greatly from landscapes to still life, they are painted unambiguously and evoke the techniques and muted colours used by impressionists. Langer focuses on emotional responses, understanding that his art is subjective in the eyes of his viewers.
Du Printemps (2015), Winter Flower (2015), and The Three Sisters (2015) all depict impressionist and abstract landscapes in muted colours. The artist's hand is visible as each brushstroke creates hazy forms of flowers and trees. The paintings possess a meditative quality and effortlessness. They invite the viewer to stop and be present in the act of looking. In their original exhibition, the artist included notes to remove any ambiguity.
"Painting is experimental. I want to get lost. Turn off the logocentric mind. Trip up purposeful reflex that seeks familiarity in recognizances….I work without plans. I want the painting to surprise me with its directness."Dimensions
