Description

Nicotye Samayualie (b. 1983, Kinngait, Nunavut) is a Canadian based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset). Coming from a family of artists that include her grandmother Keeleemeeoomee Samayualie (1913- 1983) and cousin Annie Pootoogook (1969-2016), Samayualie specializes in drawings of expressive and colourful landscapes based on the surrounding wilderness of Northern Canada. She is equally fascinated by patterns, both natural and man-made. Many of her drawings depict the textures and organized arrangements of rocks or flowers as well as everyday items such as sewing materials or food on shelves. Her particular fascination with repetition and design presents a unique perspective on Inuit material culture and the artist's own identity. Samayualie's art highlights the interconnectedness between nature and humanity from the smallest cellular structures to the large rocks that form mountain landscapes. Samayualie has been exhibited in public galleries including the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada. Her works can also be found in public and private collections across Canada.
