Josh Thorpe is a Canadian artist and songwriter based in Glasgow, Scotland. His studio practices experiment with colour and light. He also has an interest in public artworks that aim to draw attention to the systems that design both natural and man-made landscapes.
Thorpe's silkscreen prints on paper draw their imagery from photos of gardens and landscapes captured during his time in Toronto, such as Edwards Gardens. Although the subject matter is simple and repetitive, each print is unique and calculated. The artist makes multiple copies of the same image using different colours each time, experimenting with the positive and negative to discover what details emerge and what details are lost between the successive prints. Thorpe’s works play with how both light and colour are perceived. Ambient lighting and surrounding wall colours in the spaces where the artworks are installed affect how they are viewed and experienced.
Thorpe works at the University of Stirling and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has previously worked as a tutor and lecturer at OCAD University, University of Toronto, Glasgow Caledonian University, and Glasgow School of Art. His artwork has been shown internationally at venues such as David Roberts Art Foundation, London; 3A Gallery, New York; Power Plant, Toronto; CSA Space, Vancouver; Museo Napoleonico, Rome; and Open City, Lublin, Poland.
