Description

Eleanor King (b. 1979) is an interdisciplinary Nova Scotian artist based in Brooklyn, New York. King's art practice is grounded in social aesthetics and uses sound art, sculpture, and site-specific installations to examine our relationship to technology, the environment, community, and the future. Working from medium to medium, King spends most of her time focused on researching different processes of making her art and questioning the aesthetic potentials of various materials. Wormholes (2014) are a series of coloured pencil drawings made by repetitiously tracing CDs to produce long worm-like forms on paper. The compositions themselves are improvised and only when the pencils become worn down and unusable does the artist switch colours and continue the pattern. King views the process of making these pieces as performative. Each image is developed with conditions set by the materials at hand and the artist's own body. The endurance and precision required to neatly draw only within the confounds of the paper was intended to make the artist uncomfortable. The resulting artworks speak in tandem with the linear sculptures created out of the CDs and give artistic and monetary value to objects that would otherwise be put in a landfill. King is a Fulbright fellow. She has an MFA from the School of Art+Design, the State University of New York at Purchase College, and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She has been shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and Arts Nova Scotia. Eleanor is represented by Diaz Contemporary in Toronto, and her work is held in public, private, and corporate collections. She is Curatorial Manager and Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Art+Design, Purchase College, and was formerly Director, Anna Leonowens Gallery, NSCAD University. https://www.eleanorking.com/
