Angela Teng (b. 1979) explores alternatives to traditional methods and processes of making a painting. Her practice bases itself on a feminist commitment to craft, using laborious and experimental approaches to manipulate the paint or material surface. Teng is known for her crocheting, working strips of dried paint or linen canvas to create interwoven geometric patterns that resemble yarn knitting or carpet weaving.
By turning painting into domestic handcrafts generally performed by women, Teng’s unusual and colourful paintings subvert a tradition of Western art that has celebrated male artists and privileged certain artistic practices, such as painting and sculpture.
Teng is a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. She was the Winner of the Whistler Arts Council’s 2009 Emerging Artist Award of Excellence. Her works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions across Canada.Artwork Details
