Jimmy Limit (b. 1982, Toronto) is a photographic artist whose practice extends to installation, ceramics, and sculpture. Limit's art is informed by his work as a commercial photographer capturing images of products and art exhibitions. He is interested in the passive consumption of images in our daily lives and how visual media impacts the value we place on objects.
Limit's photos appear like everyday advertising photography. The images are bold and bright and filled with things. The items themselves are commonplace. However, their odd assembly creates confusion, leaving viewers questioning the purpose or function of the composition. The artist aims to provoke a reaction and uses humour to liberate the objects from their original contexts. He places value in the image itself and not the items in it. The pseudo-sculptures he creates are meant to be photographed rather than looked at in person. They are ridiculous and strange, made with purpose but simultaneously having none. Limit creates a dialogue by being accessible. There are no tricks or confusing camera angles. Viewers may find some depth or meaning but are simply intended to consume the images, take photos, and be curious.
Limit currently lives and works in St. Catherines, Canada. He graduated with a BFA in Photography from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2012. Limit has exhibited at Clint Roenisch Gallery, Queen Specific Gallery, The Power Plant, and Art Metropole, Toronto; Republic Gallery, Vancouver, Canada; Side Effects Gallery, New York; and Signal Gallery, Brooklyn, USA.Made/Created
