Description

Jennifer Murphy (b.1974, Toronto, Ontario) creates assemblages, sculptures, and installations that examine the visual and material aspects that connect the natural world. She is known for making collages of faces, animals, and trees from cutouts of animals taken from magazines and textbooks. Munari’s Eyes (2010) winds varying colours of satin cord to form two round eyes reminiscent of the many drawings of faces produced by Italian artist and designer Bruno Munari (1908-1996). Munari played with the innate ability for people to see eyes and, subsequently, faces in mundane objects (pareidolia). He designed countless different faces out of different lines and shapes. Each was easy to distinguish, demonstrating how the form of the face could be infinitely expressed. Murphy employs this principle in her work, indicating the important physical and emotional relationship we have with eyes which mediate our interaction with the world around us. Jennifer Murphy is based out of Toronto. She received a BFA from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Murphy's art has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at the Power Plant, Mercer Union, the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre; and White Columns in New York. She has also been featured in publications such as Canadian Art Magazine, The Globe and Mail, and Bad Day Magazine. https://www.jennifermurphystudio.com/
