Description

Nivingajuliat, or wall hangings, became a popular art form in the North in the 1970s. The practices is accredited to a group of women from Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) who combined Inuit sewing practices used to make clothing with a creative desire to record personal stories, oral histories, and traditional knowledge. Sewing has alway been an integral part of Inuit culture that is tied to the making of clothing, the sharing of knowledge, family/community relationships, and life in the harsh environments of the North. These works made of cloth and felt serve as means to communicate stories, values, and aspects of culture.
