Lorna Bauer (b.1980, Toronto) uses photography and sculpture to explore how people interact with and relate to their surroundings. These highly intimate, personal, and site-specific artworks deconstruct spaces in an almost documentarian fashion to both research and investigate the contexts and relationships within these living ecologies. She gives attention to the material sensations and experiences created by these environments using only analogue technology to keep the composition simple and truthful. The moments captured by her art are haunting expressive portraits of physical spaces that place the viewer at a threshold between the private and the public.
Bauer’s practice is based in Montreal. She received a BFA degree from Concordia University, Montreal in 2005. Both solo and group exhibitions of Bauer's work have taken place both in Canada and abroad, including at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, the Darling Foundry in Montreal, YYZ Artist Outlet in Toronto, Franz Kaka, Eleftheria Tseliou Gallery, and Snehta Gallery (Athens). She has also served as artist-in-residence at Despina (Rio de Janeiro), The Récollets (Paris), the Quebec-New York Residency, Banff Centre, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her art is included in both public and private collections, including those at the Montréal Contemporary Art Museum and the Quebec National Museum of Fine Arts. Numerous journals, including Artforum, Canadian Art, C-Magazine, and Le Devoir, among others, have included articles on Bauer's work.
