Description

Tony Angualluq (b. 1970) is a Utkusiksalingmiut Inuit artist from Qamani'tuaq (Baker Lake), Nunavut. Born in Churchill, Manitoba, he was raised in Qamani'tuaq by his adopted parents, Luke Anguhadluq (1895-1982) and Marion Tuu'luq (1910-2002), a printmaker and a textile artist, respectively. In his 20s, Anguhalluq learned about his talent for printmaking during a local printmaking workshop. He later expanded his practice to include drawing. Anguhalluq is part of a generation of artists that broke from a tradition of simple compositions where solitary figures are depicted on a blank background. Comparatively, his mixed media drawings combine abstraction and repetitive patterning with vibrate colours to cover the surface and make the landscape the focus. Anguhalluq often also adds figures of humans or animals that are shown interacting with their environment. Hisks are given descriptive narrative titles that leave little room for interpretation, which emphasizes the variety and variation of the vegetation, hills, and waterways that the artist imagines. His drawings and prints are found in many important private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Smithsonian.
