Description

Stephen Andrews (b. 1956) is a Toronto-based artist from Sarnia, Ontario. Over his extensive artistic career, he has explored the politics and mechanical processes of image making utilizing the different mediums of photography, drawing, animation, and painting to capture and convey the concepts of memory, identity, the body, and the human relationship with the natural world. Fascinated by mass media technology and its ability to regulate our interaction and understanding of the world, Andrews has sourced inspiration from television, newspaper, and internet imagery. The artist aims to facilitate a more intimate dialogue between the audience and the world of images around them. Andrews' works have discussed geopolitical conflicts, the environment, trauma, as well as the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In doing so, he demonstrates the power and vulnerability of the self in its environment and suspends it in time. Over the last 30 years, Andrews has been exhibited internationally in countries including Canada, the United States, Brazil, Scotland, France, and Japan. His art is found in several public and private collections, including those at Harvard University, the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Belkin Art Gallery, the Schwartz Collection, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. http://stephenandrewsartist.com/
