Description

Lyse Lemieux (b. 1956, Ottawa) has worked primarily in drawing, sculpture, painting, and installation. More recently, her practice has included public art projects that aim to examine the potential of public spaces and the ways they can support people emotionally, physically and communally. Lemieux's art straddles between abstraction and figuration using freeform blobs and ovals to suggest the forms and figures of landscapes and human bodies. She frequently makes use of textiles in her works, stitching together fabrics and cut paper in order to expand the practices of drawing and painting. To the artist, one can make use of scissors and thread to draw and paint. Mon Hiver Chez Toi (2019) layers of cut yupo paper and thread present a winter landscape filled with snow and trees. Although the composition appears flat, Lemieux creates the illusion of depth with bold black strands of thread and vibrant sections of blue, black and white to clearly define the foreground and background. There is a peculiar quality to her work as her subject matter is both obscured and revealed by the medium. Lemieux attended the University of Ottawa and later graduated with a BFA from the University of British Columbia. She has been exhibited nationally and internationally at the Canadian Cultural Centre; Rome, the Vancouver Art Gallery; Vancouver, Oakville Galleries; Toronto, Richmond Art Gallery; Richmond, BC, The Charles H. Scott Gallery; Vancouver, Trépanier-Baer Gallery in Calgary, Katzman Contemporary, Toronto; WAAP; Vancouver, SFU Gallery; Burnaby and, the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver. Lemieux has been awarded grants from the BC Arts Council, and the Canada Council and is the 2017 recipient of the VIVA AWARD granted annually by the Doris and Jack Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts. https://www.lyselemieux.com/
