Laurence Pilon (b.1990) is a contemporary artist based in Montreal. Navigating both the representational and abstract, her works require slow observation to unearth what is being represented. The pale tones, successive layering, and fuzzy imagery of her paintings appear like a fossil record on the canvas of some unknown event.
Pilon’s practice is concerned with the materiality of painting. As someone with autism, she uses the medium to express her "neurodivergent" perspective of the world and the network of relationships within it. Each of Pilon's images takes several months to emerge. The artist only stops painting once the artwork instills a sense of surprise or unfamiliarity. At that point, her goal has been achieved---the viewer experiences a world in flux, a world both familiar and strange.
Pilon holds an MFA in Studio Arts from the University of Guelph (2021) and a BFA from Concordia University with great distinction (2015).
