Description

Nadia Gohar (b.1989, Cairo, Egypt) is a Toronto-based Egyptian-Canadian visual artist whose art explores the themes of memory, identity, and movement. Working in various mediums, she examines the relationships between material objects and identity, questioning how objects convey and preserve memory as well as why these certain objects are chosen to represent identities, cultures, and eras. Gohar probes our fascination with restoring, archiving and documenting through her captivating and symbol-laden works that test dominant narratives put forth by museums. Her twin paintings, A Gallon and A Gallon (Red) depict cisterns for transporting and storing water. For the artist, water serves as a metaphor for understanding the fluidity of knowledge, culture, and history. After painting A Gallon, the artist replicated the composition by eye. The minor variations, both intentionally and unintentionally, in A Gallon (Red) reflect what changes occur through the process of looking and how these changes affect our understanding.
