Karen Kraven is a Montreal-based artist working with photography, sculpture and installation. Her art creates unexpected encounters between different mediums and strange juxtapositions using optical illusions to distort the senses. Born in London, Ontario, Kraven has a fascination with textiles influenced by the knitting factory previously operated by her father and grandfather. Many of her works examine clothing as it relates to the body and society and employ fabrics or fabric-like materials, such as napkins, paper, or money.
Jasper, Elizabeth, Wilfrid, Zeiss, William (2014) are digital prints of varying denominations of Canadian currency. The artist folded each bill and digitally enlarged it until the embedded security features were no longer perceptible to the technology and the familiar imagery felt foreign to the eye. The resulting images appear like Japanese origami paper or textile cloth as ornate textile-like patterns emerge from the layered folds.
Kraven holds an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal, where she was the recipient of the Dale & Nick Tedeschi Fellowship. Her art has been exhibited at Centre Clark, Montreal, Leonard & Ellen Bina Gallery, Montreal, Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto Mississauga, and Neubacher Shor Contemporary, Toronto.
