Description

Marie-Claire Blais (b. 1974, Lévis, Quebec) is a Montreal-based contemporary artist. Primarily working with abstraction inspired by French-Canadian artist Françoise Sullivan (b. 1923; Montreal), Blais unites the practices of painting and sculpture by cutting and warping painted canvases or paper to give them form and depth. Her use of abstraction is intended to give focus to the physical and visual relationship between the viewer and the art. Blais often drapes her works on the wall or produces freestanding sculptures and playfully utilizes lighting to emphasize the shape and form of her artworks and the spaces they occupy. Her work has been presented in Canada and internationally, notably in a solo exhibition at Centre Culturel Canadien (Paris, 2017), at the British School at Rome (Rome, 2018), at the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal (Montréal, 2017; 2015), at Diaz Contemporary gallery (Toronto, 2016) and Fondation Guido Molinari (Montreal, 2013).
