Description

Sky Glabush (b. 1970, Alert Bay, British Columbia) is a Canadian artist best known for his landscapes, portraiture and still life paintings. Although he has worked in a variety of media, including sculpture and textiles, his practice is shaped around an exploration of art as it relates to spirituality and storytelling. Glabush initially painted in abstraction, finding that although contemporary art was concerned with ideas, concepts, and innovation, the art iself was inherently based in storytelling. Over the next several years, the artist experimented with various styles turning his awareness of visual theory and narrative into a study of the creative processes of the artist. He explains his artworks as part of a spiritual practice that draws from his own experiences, energies and spirit. Glabush’s subject matter has often been informed by his experiences living across Canada, the United States, and the Netherlands. His Rental series (2008-2013) documents the student rental properties in London, Ontario, where he currently works as an associate professor at the University of Western Ontario. The bold lines, sombre colour pallet, and wintery setting remind the viewer that these buildings are not homes but transitory and private spaces. This is supported by the visual realism of the paintings that appear like photographs of the hauntingly empty spaces. Glabush has works and lives in London, Ontario. He is an associate professor of visual art at the University of Western Ontario. Glabush received his BFA from the University of Saskatchewan and his MA from the University of Alberta. In 2020, Glabush travelled to Guyana, where he taught art to the inmates of prisons.[8][9] That year, two of his large-scale paintings were added to the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. https://skyglabush.ca
