Description

Tammi Campbell’s (b.1974, Calgary, Alberta) art practice is based on research, critique, and feminism. Her works are abstract, minimalistic, and appear composed of or wrapped in materials found in the object's studio. However, Campbell's works are made entirely in acrylic paint using techniques that she developed and researched. The bubble wrap, packing foam, cardboard, polyethylene wrap, and packing tape are a trick of the eye—a trompe l’oeil—that serves as a feminist commentary on the traditions of a male-dominated modernist art canon. Campbell often recreates historic artworks, giving the appearance that they are still wrapped up in their packaging. In simulating these materials, which are often used to ship, store, and protect works of art, Campbell alludes to the memorialization and honouring of certain artists and styles in the collections of museums and galleries. She also uses it as a commentary on modernism holding itself in a prison of its rigidity, unable to break free of its self-imposed limitations. Campbell holds a BFA from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. Over the past ten years, Campbell has shown in solo and group exhibitions across Canada and the U.S. including at Arsenal, New York (2019); the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon (2015); the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Toronto (2014); the Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina (2013); Mercer Union, Toronto (2013); and the Galerie de l’UQAM, Montréal (2013). She has also participated in the Canadian Biennale 2014 at the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa, as well as the 30th International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-St-Paul. Her recent solo exhibition Exactly Wrong at MAKI Gallery, Tokyo, was her first time presenting work in Asia. Campbell lives and works in Montréal, Quebec. https://tammicampbell.com/
