Description

Jim Verberg (b. 1977, Belleville, Ontario) bases his artistic practice on an exploration of the fleeting effects of light. Originally a photographer and video artist interested in capturing the intricacies of intimacy and relationship, Verburg used his knowledge of photography and optics to expand his study of light to different mediums. His current works now employ paint, ink, charcoal, and powdered graphite on various surfaces to experiment with the various properties of light—reflection, absorption, opacity, and translucence. Often abstract, minimalistic, and monochromatic, Verburg’s artworks treat light as both the subject and material. Each work evokes a different effect and emotional response as the physical and visual properties of the material surface plane and added medium shape the shades of black, white, and grey in response to the individual environment. Jim Verburg is currently based in Toronto. He is a graduate of Concordia University in Montreal. Recent projects include a public art installation for the city of Ottawa, a choreographed work for the Toronto Dance Theatre, a book project with Fw: Photography in Amsterdam, and an upcoming group exhibition For you / And me, at Paul Kuhn Gallery (Calgary), and solo projects at Zalucky Contemporary (Toronto), and Rodman Hall Art Centre (Brock University, St Catharines Ontario). http://jimverburg.squarespace.com/
