Description

Stephanie Comilang (b. 1980, Toronto, Ontario) delves into themes of diaspora, migration, and social mobility through her documentary-style video work. Her practice often focuses on the experiences of migrants, particularly those forced to leave their homelands due to unforeseen circumstances. In her video and textile installation, "Search for Life," Comilang explores the enduring legacy of Spanish colonialism in the Philippines and the historical Manila galleon trade routes and their contemporary relevance. Accompanying the film are textile works crafted from pineapple fiber, a material introduced to the Philippines by the Spanish. These embroidered textiles reference the Manila shawl and the colonial past, while also celebrating the natural world. Each framed "bouquet" is named after a port city on the Spanish trade routes and depict images flowers from trade goods such as banana, cacao and coffee plants imported by the Spanish.
