Description

Ed Spence (b. 1981, Salmon Arm, British Colombia) breathes new life into existing images through a unique, hands-on approach to collage. He meticulously deconstructs photographs, fragmenting them into individual pixels, which he then reassembles into mesmerizing patterns and shapes. The resulting works appear as a captivating blend of the familiar and the abstract, where serene landscapes or classic portraits are disrupted by vibrant pixelated waves, geometric grids, or swirling clouds of color. His "Pixellation" series embodies this interest, deconstructing images to analyze their constituent elements. As Ed explains, "Dissecting the image's materiality compels you to confront the illusion of pictorial space. Fundamentally, it's a two-dimensional, flat medium. Yet, the act of cutting into it reintroduces a third dimension. This serves as a reminder that it has always been a three-dimensional entity: ink on paper, the reflection of light, and the illusion of color." This fascination stems from his childhood, when his father would spend hours typing complex lines of code on their home computer, captivating young Ed with the mesmerizing interplay of mathematics, science, and art.
