Description

Johnny Pootoogook (b.1970) was born in the traditional Inuit camp of Ikerasak near Kinngait, Nunavut. Son of renown sculptor and printmaker Kananginak Pootoogook (1935-2010), his artistic talent was nurtured from a young age at the Kinngait Studios. Pootoogook’s artworks reflect his connection Inuit culture. Over the past decade, he has turned his focus to from sculpture and print to drawing, creating a diverse and impressive body of work that depicts animals, people, and landscapes to reflect life in the North. See here, columns of snow are shown atop a series of houses. The artist makes note of their abstract form, playfully labelling the work based on his interpretation of their shapes. Throuhout his career, Johnny Pootoogook's has been an active supporter of his community. His work has also been included in the Annual Cape Dorset Print Collections of 1992, 1993, and 2020. In 2019, he gained national attention with his large-scale drawings at Art Toronto.
