Description

Lotus Laurie Kang (b. 1985, Toronto) is a Toronto-based artist. She is known for her immersive installations, exploring themes of identity, memory, and the body's connection to the environment. Kang frequently employs camera-less techniques, directly manipulating photographic chemicals and light-sensitive materials to generate images that aren't static snapshots of a particular instant, but rather evolving abstractions that results in colors and patterns that mimic both the human body and nature. Kang's work often blends organic materials like plants with photographic processes and sculptural elements. She is particularly known for her photograms, created by exposing light-sensitive paper to sunlight. Unlike traditional photography, Kang allows her work to continue to change and react to light and humidity. This mirrors the human body and nature, which are in constant states of flux and being influenced by their surroundings.
