Description

Angela Leach (b.1966) is a highly regarded visual artist from Toronto. Leach is known for her vividly coloured geometric abstraction. Her compositions make use of grids to create confined blocks of varying colours that run in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal bands across the canvas. Leach experiments with the arrangement of her composition and the colour palette in order to trick the eye and play with the viewer’s perception of depth. To the artist, the conditions of the grid are part of her process. “The act of painting serves to fulfill the terms of planning; a function that is purely mechanical thus forming the aesthetic for the Abstract Repeat series of paintings.”- Angela Leach in 2008 interview for WYNICK/TUCK Gallery. Leach studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She currently serves as an Instructor at Sheridan College in Oakville as part of the joint Art & Art History program between the University of Toronto Mississauga and Sheridan College. Her works have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Power Plant, Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, and the Edmonton Art Gallery. Gordon Hatt, director at the time of the Cambridge Galleries, organized a major exhibition of her work, which travelled nationally to public galleries including the Doris McCarthy Gallery, University of Toronto, Scarborough and Southern Alberta Art Galler. Leach also had two major paintings selected by the curators for the 2005, important international exhibition, Extreme Abstraction, at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo. Her work is included in many private and public collections including the Art gallery of Ontario. http://www.angelaleach.com/
