Description

Lino Lago (b. 1973, Redondela, Spain) is a contemporary Spanish painter recognized for his innovative dialogue between classical portraiture and contemporary abstraction. Educated at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Lago has developed an international reputation for works that combine the technical mastery of Old Master painting with bold, unexpected interventions of colour and form. Best known for his acclaimed Fake Abstract series, Lago appropriates the visual language of European academic painting and disrupts it with monochromatic fields, splashes, and gestural marks. These interventions simultaneously conceal and reveal the underlying image, prompting viewers to reconsider traditional notions of beauty, authorship, and art history. His paintings create a compelling tension between realism and abstraction, past and present, preservation and disruption. Lago has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and North America, with solo and group exhibitions in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Lithuania, Canada, and the United States. His work has been featured by leading international galleries and at major art fairs including ARCO Madrid, Art Miami, and the London Art Fair. Through a practice that challenges the conventions of painting while celebrating its enduring relevance, Lago continues to explore the intersection of historical imagery and contemporary visual culture. His work is held in numerous private and institutional collections worldwide and has received international recognition for its unique contribution to contemporary painting.
