Description

Margaux Lenore Smith (b. 1992, Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian artist whose painting practice explores themes of transformation, perception, and ambiguity. Drawing from Surrealist traditions and the techniques of automatic drawing, she employs chance-based processes to create subconscious imagery and cultivate unexpected visual relationships. Smith's visual language draws on a wide range of influences, including literature, photographic archives, found imagery, fashion, folklore, cinema, and art history. Through the layering and transformation of these sources, she constructs evocative pictorial worlds that investigate memory, consciousness, and the instability of representation. Forms emerge, dissolve, and continually shift, evoking states of becoming rather than fixed narratives. Landscapes often serve as a central point in her work, functioning simultaneously as a physical environment and imaginary terrain. Inspired by forests, gardens, waterways, and natural geographies, Smith approaches the landscape as a site of memory and feeling, inviting viewers into immersive spaces where inner and outer worlds converge, and where observation merges with the imaginary Her work has been exhibited across Canada as well as internationally in China and the Netherlands. Smith's artwork is held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada and in numerous corporate and private collections, including TD Bank, RBC, and Desjardins.
