Pierre Dorion (b. 1959; Ottawa, Ontario) is a Montreal-based artist who works primarily in painting. His paintings border between photorealism and minimalist abstraction, drawing from the urban architecture that the artist photographs during his travels. Each is narrative and documents the artist’s encounters with his reality, but the spaces depicted appear unfamiliar and alien. Dorion evokes a sense of erasure, absence, and loss between the physical world, the image captured by his photographs, and the pictorial practices of painting as depth and perspective become flattened and distorted. Instead of truth, the composition of the canvas portrays a hollow echo of a reality made from the formal elements of line, shape, and colour.
Dorion received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Ottawa. His art has been exhibited at the Beijing International Art Biennale, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Galerie de l'UQÀM and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. It can be found in private and public collections around Canada and internationally.Artwork Details
