Lisa Klaptock (b. 1968) is a Canadian photographer based in Toronto.
Born in Kamloops, British Columbia, Klapstock's photography focuses on surveillance and the role of the camera in understanding visual perception. The subjects of her works are urban environments where human presence is felt and the boundaries between private and public spaces meet.
Using her camera, Klapstock takes photos from public sidewalks through gaps and holes in gates, doors, and fences to reveal the backyards, gardens and outdoor spaces of residential houses. The subject matter appears unfamiliar and voyeuristic as the artist captures unfocused segments of dividing thresholds and the areas beyond in order to visually express the divide between communal space and private property. Klapstock draws attention to how we perceive and visually engage with different environments. Her works invite viewers to participate in looking at a space which is traditionally off limits and to consider the social boundaries that affect vision.
Klapstock's photography and video art have been exhibited internationally. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Diane Farris Gallery, Vancouver; The Center for Photography, New York; Centre Vu, Quebec City; and the Odense Foto Triennale, Denmark. She is represented in Canada by Diane Farris Gallery.
