Alice Gong Xiaowen (b. 1994, Beijing, China) is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, material culture, translation, and the instability of identity. Working across sculpture, installation, sound, assemblage, cast glass, and metal casting, Gong Xiaowen combines found objects, industrial materials, and ephemeral elements to create works that blur the boundaries between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Her practice investigates how objects become vessels for personal, cultural, and historical memory, and how meaning shifts through processes of translation, displacement, and loss.
A significant aspect of Gong Xiaowen's practice is her use of cast glass, a medium that allows her to materialize ideas of fragility, preservation, and transformation. Through the glass casting process, she captures traces, impressions, and forms that appear suspended between permanence and dissolution. The translucency of glass serves as a metaphor for memory itself: at once present and elusive. Her cast glass works often engage with tactile and sensory experiences, preserving fragments of objects, gestures, or histories while emphasizing the instability of perception and recollection. This material approach aligns with her broader interest in creating relic-like forms that embody the emotional and cultural residues of lived experience.
