Jagdeep Raina (b. 1991, Guelph, Ontario) is an interdisciplinary artist working across textiles, drawing, writing, ceramics, 35mm film, and animation. His practice is grounded in close research of archival materials, which he uses to explore how histories are remembered, passed down, and reshaped within diasporic communities. Through his varied use of materials, Raina focuses on the traces people leave behind from the personal rituals to the stories that reveal how cultural memory is built and sustained over time.
Textiles form a central pillar of Raina’s practice. Drawing from South Asian craft traditions and Punjabi Sikh diasporic archives, he transforms photographs, oral histories, and community documents into densely embroidered narratives. His stitched works foreground the gestures of everyday life and explore how cultural identity is preserved through the slow, tactile processes of making. By translating archival memory into fabric, Raina challenges the boundaries between fine art and craft, positioning textiles as vital sites of storytelling, resilience, and repair.
Raina is a former Core Program Fellow at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and a Paul Mellon Fellow at Yale University. He is currently completing a master’s degree in information science/library science at Queens College, NY, with a focus on archives and preservation. A recipient of the 2020 Sobey Art Award, he has exhibited internationally at institutions including Galerie Anne Barrault (Paris), Jhaveri Contemporary (Mumbai), the Textile Museum (Toronto), Camden Arts Centre (London), and the 18th Istanbul Biennial.
His work is held in the permanent collections of the Musée des Beaux‑Arts de Montréal, the RISD Museum, the Yale Center for British Art, the National Gallery of Canada, and others. Raina lives and works in Queens, New York.Artwork Details
