Amputation set, flap type

Name/Title

Amputation set, flap type

Description

18th century cased surgical set. This is an exceptional late 18th century amputation set by Savigny of London. Savigny was the premier British instrument manufacturer at the time and the maker of instruments for the King. James Yonge (1646-1721) was the first to describe the flap amputation, a later method that was faster, and was associated with less postoperative pain than the circular technique. The illustration of that technique is from "Traité complet d’anatomie de l’homme" 2nd ed. (1866–1871) by J.M. Bourgery, Claude Bernard, and N.H. Jacob.
