This instrument was intended for use in 18th century mastectomies. The first illustration is from
"A General System of Surgery in Three Parts" (1743) by Laurence Heister where this instrument is described as "a Fork of Bidlow, like a sword, to elevate the breast in amputating cancers." The image following that is from "Traité complet d’anatomie de l’homme" 2nd ed. (1866–1871) by J.M. Bourgery, Claude Bernard, and N.H. Jacob. Provenance included.Condition
