Lobotomy instruments with hammer

Name/Title

Lobotomy instruments with hammer

Description

This osteoclast is a very early design from a neurologists office in Liege, Belgium. George Washington University surgeon Dr. Walter Friedman is seen in surgery. Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz won the Noble Prize in medicine in1949 for the discovery of psychosurgery intended to affect behavior. A later design of his instrument was popular in the United States but lobotomy soon fell out of favor.
