Name/Title
Gross, A System of Surgery, 2 volumes (1859)Description
Professor Samuel Gross was one of the most prominent surgeons of the nineteenth century and was the chairman of surgery at the Jefferson Medical College from 1856 to 1882. He was an extremely important American surgeon, author and medical teacher. His two volume “System of Surgery” provided a basis for surgical techniques used during the Civil War. Unfortunately, Dr. Gross remained one of the last major medical figures of the nineteenth century to be unconvinced by the monumental discoveries earlier that century regarding asepsis. Included is an admission card to one of Dr. Gross' surgery classes with his signature on the back.
To the right of that card is the famous painting “The Gross Clinic” (1875) by Thomas Eakins showing Gross’ disregard for aseptic technique. Eakins had submitted his painting to be exhibited in the 1876 World’s Fair to be held in Philadelphia but the selection committee rejected it as being too graphic.Dimensions
