Description

William Hunter waited for the hanged corpses of criminals to reach rigor mortis and then selected the most appropriate to create models for anatomic study. Michael Spang then made a wax model of one of those corpses followed by Edward Burch's creation of this bronze écorché. A similar model is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, pictured below.
