Inoculation points

Name/Title

Inoculation points

Description

These are ivory inoculation points similar to the ones used by Edward Jenner (1749-1823) when, in May of 1796, he took an important step in making vaccination available to the masses by removing infectious material from Sarah Nelms, a milkmaid who had been exposed to cowpox, and inoculating the arm of James Phipps. Below is an illustration from Jenner's "An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccine" (1798). Not all embraced Jenner's landmark discovery, one of whom was Benjamin Franklin who changed his position after the death of his unvaccinated son to smallpox. Included is an etching of Edward Jenner among patients in the Smallpox and Inoculation Hospital at St. Pancras (1802) by James Gillray showing the presumed dangers of being vaccinated.
