As a result of the efforts of social reformer Dorothea Dix, construction on the Harrisburg State Lunatic Hospital and Union Asylum for the Insane began in Pennsylvania in 1845 with the first patients entering in 1851. The name was changed to the Harrisburg State Hospital in 1921 and it closed on 2006. Most buildings will be torn down with a few to remain standing including the pictured administration building.Condition
