Mudge inhaler

Name/Title

Mudge inhaler

Description

John Mudge was an 18th century British surgeon and astronomer who designed the world's first commercialized inhaler to deliver medications to the respiratory tract in 1778. He adapted a beer tankard to be used as the first British ether inhaler soon after the discovery of ether anesthesia at the Ether Dome in Boston in 1846. He also used fumes of opium to treat any number of respiratory diseases. A very rare original mouthpiece is included with this early example.
