Name/Title
Ophthalmoscope by von HelmholtzDescription
In 1851, Herman von Helmholtz (1821-1894) invented the ophthalmoscope, a device that enabled him to be the first to visualize the retina, and ophthalmology was on its way to becoming a specialized branch of medicine. This is an extremely rare example of his first instrument and even more rarely made in the United States, in New York by Otto & Reynders. I know if only three others and they are in museums.Dimensions
