Dover's tablets

Name/Title

Dover's tablets

Description

Thomas Dover was an 18th century British physician who formulated the very popular cold and fever medication (Dover's powder), probably because of its one primary ingredient - opium. He became a privateer in the South Seas and helped rescue the stranded Alexander Selkirk who, when returned to England, was Daniel Defoe's inspiration for his novel "Robinson Crusoe." Selkirk was a pirate who had been abandoned by his shipmates because of his complaints that their pirate ship was not seaworthy. Ironically after leaving him stranded their ship sank.
