Prontosil

Name/Title

Prontosil

Description

Prontosil was a precursor of the first synthetic antibiotic, the sulfonamides, for which German Gerhard Domagk won the Nobel Prize in 1932. Winston Churchill developed pneumonia during WWII and his life was saved by the use of a medication that ironically had been developed by the Bayer Company in Germany. Prontosil was not well tolerated orally so the Massengil Company added ethylene glycol (antifreeze) to improve its taste. The resulting 100 deaths from renal failure prompted the FDA to pass new regulations of the industry. Here you see original prontosil both in pill and in injectable form.
