Shrunken head

Name/Title

Shrunken head

Description

The ultimate amputation, this shrunken head (or tsantsa), was harvested by the Jivaro people in Ecuador as a trophy from a neighboring tribe. The Shuar tribe believed that safety was insured by trapping the soul of an enemy in the shrunken head. Through sewing up the mouth the soul remained inside and therefore was no danger to anyone outside. After the skull was removed, smaller and smaller hot rocks were placed inside the skin which caused it to shrink more and more.
