This is a boxed instrument by Charriere and was the first mechanical device used for measuring the pulse. Physicians often determined the proper extent of their bloodletting by changes in the pulse of their patient. Above is "The Visit of the Physician" (The Love Sick) (1657) by Frans van Mieris the Elder.
