Description

French theriac container. Theriac was first mixed by first century Greek King Mithridates as a serpent venom antidote. Over the next two millennia it was produced all over the world to cure any number of ailments including the Black Plague. It contained many different ingredients but usually these four were found: opium, honey, cinnamon and various plants or herbs (here represented the flower peony, named after the Greek physician Paean).
