In 1799 Alessandro Volta made the first chemical electric battery similar to the one shown. He used alternating discs of copper and zinc separated by acid soaked cloth or cardboard. It was a battery of that type that Aldini used in his famous attempts to bring an executed criminal back to life which was the inspiration for Mary Shelly to write her Frankenstein novel.
