X-ray fluoroscopy for shoe fitting

Name/Title

X-ray fluoroscopy for shoe fitting

Description

The shoe-fitting fluoroscope was the first commercial, wide-spread practical application of X-ray technology in the middle of the 20th century before the danger of x-ray irradiation was appreciated. Many shoe stores around the country invited customers to have their feet fluoroscoped with their new shoes to check on the proper fit. Once the danger of radiation was realized these machines were outlawed and by 1970 most were destroyed. This one is in working order and the image you see is what a customer might have seen almost a century ago.
