Postcard #51Description
Postcard depicting the purported April 11 (24) Memorial Statue, constructed in Constantinople in the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide. The same photograph appears in Teotig’s Monument to April 11 book. The postcard bears the stamp Ապրիլ 11ի Սգահանդէսի Յանձնախումբ Կ. Պոլիս 1919 (“Committee for the April 11 Commemoration”).
Following the first commemoration, plans were made to erect a monument dedicated to the victims of the genocide. A committee was formed to oversee the project, and the monument was supposedly completed in 1919 on the grounds of the Pangaltı Armenian Cemetery. The cemetery, which was later demolished and confiscated by the Turkish government in the 1930s, stood in the area that is today Gezi Park, near Taksim Square in Istanbul. This became the first monument ever dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide.Postcard Details
