Ottoman Armenian Document #38Scope and Content
This Ottoman-era property deed, dated November 8, 1900 (26 Teşrin-i Evvel 1316), records the sale of a butcher shop located in the Han Kurbu neighborhood of Adana. The property was sold for a sum of 10,375 kuruş by the sons of Hacı Ali Ağa, namely Mehmed, Osman, Cemil, and Mustafa. The buyer is identified simply as Mustafa. The document is officially stamped and signed, including signatures from the local headman (muhtar) of Adana’s Eski Çarşı (Old Market) neighborhood, Sarkis, as well as an individual named Karabet, whose full name is partially obscured. The presence of Armenian officials such as Sarkis and Karabet reflects the multiethnic composition of the late Ottoman administrative and commercial classes in provincial cities like Adana. The document itself is a printed Ottoman title deed (tapu senedi), filled out in black ink, featuring various official stamps and seals attesting to the legitimacy of the transaction.Created By
