Description

Arsen Ghazigian received his primary education in his birthplace of Bardizag. In 1888, he moved to the island of San Lazzaro in Venice to continue his studies. In 1895, he became a member of the Mekhitarist Congregation and began his literary, translation, and pedagogical work. Initially, he wrote in Classical Armenian, later transitioning to the vernacular language, becoming a dedicated advocate of the latter. He translated numerous works of European classical and contemporary poets, including Homer’s Iliad in 1911 and Odyssey in 1924, Virgil’s Aeneid in 1910 and Georgics in 1923, Sophocles' Oedipus Rex in 1927, Horace’s The Art of Poetry in 1923, The Song of Roland in 1925, and The Nibelungenlied in 1925, both French and German epics.
